Kottayam is the famous district in the state of Kerala. It is the only district in the state with no border with either Western Ghats or the Arabian Sea. The district has its headquarters at Kottayam town. This place is known as the city of three L i.e. Literacy, Lakes, and Latex. It is also the first tobacco free district of India. It has played an important role in all the political agitations of modern times. The present Kottayam district was previously the part of an erstwhile princely state of Travancore. It is also known as the language capital of Kerala. Major religious communities of this district are Hinduism and Christianity. The weather of this place is quite humid and humidity increases during the rainy season. The well – known attractions in Kottayam are its backwaters, ancient monuments, hill stations, and religious places.

There are 5 railway stations in Kottayam district, out of which, Kottayam railway station is the major one.
