History of Fort Aguada
The well preserved and maintained Fort Aguada was constructed in 1612 by the Portuguese to guard against the Dutch invasions and the Marathas. The fort was the reference point for the vessels coming from the parts of Europe.
This port was built on the beach south of candolim on the banks of Mandovi River and was mainly given the task of defending the shipping and the nearby Bardez district.
Places to visit
There is a fresh water spring inside the fort which gives more than enough water supply to the ships passing by. There is a 4 storey lighthouse erected in 1612 and was once a grand stand of 79 canons and a surrounding moat to protect it. More than these points, the fort itself is a big attraction for tourists.
