Best places to visit in Munnar - Most visited and important tourist attractions

A tourist's visit to Kerala can not complete without seeing in and around Munnar. Famous tea gardens, water falls, rare animal species and birds & bees are found here. To help in discovering the spirit of Munnar, I have complied here the best places to visit in and around Munnar.

Nestled between Western Ghats at a height of some 6000 ft above sea level, Munnar invites every tourist to see in and around. It's one of the major places of attractions in Kerala. The backwaters settings of Munnar win hearts of every tourist. Here are some 13 places in and around Munnar you must visit while coming to South India. During our recent backing trip to Munnar, we spent some time in each of these places.

Mattupetty Dam

Just 13 Km drive Kerala is a must visit site to enjoy the scenic surroundings of Kerala Backwaters. Stay for couple of hours and you will be thrilled in seeing groups of elephants visiting here. This is why, Mattupetty Dam often referred as water holes. The Gravity Dam is used for water storage and producing electricity.

Kundala Lake

Some 20 Km drive from Munnar, the Kundala Lake lies between mountain ranges is an artificial reservoir made of a small Arch shaped Dam. Go for Shikara boat ride here.

Top Station

The Top Station lies some 40 km from Munnar at a height of 1880 mtrs above sea level. The magnificent sight of Western Ghats and Theni from top gives you a feel of standing in heaven. Top Station named so because its located at the topmost point of Kundala Valley Railway.

Echo Point

Enjoy some Doppler Effects here. Go there, say your name, scream a loud or sing like a sparrow. Wait a minute. You will hear echo back. Sure kids love staying here without chocolates.

Rajamala, Eravikulam National Park

Its part of Eravikulam national park situated some 15 kms from Munnar. This area is the natural habitat of the Nilgiri Tahr an endangered species. Now area is converted to a national park to provide a safe sanctuary for Nilgiri Tahr.

Kerala Forest Department has started online ticket booking to Rajamala since the summer in 2016.

Tata Tea Museum

The Tea Museum, previously known as Tata Tea Museum, is the first such museum situated in Kerala. It's built with the purpose to show and educate visitors about the good old tea business in the area and how today's tea business evolved over a period of time. Marayoor Sandalwood Forests

Drive some 42 km north of Munnar and enjoy the fragrance of natural sandalwood. Also, you will found here Stone age paintings and rock edicts from as old as 10000 BC.

Attukad Waterfalls

Just 9 Km away from Munnar before Pallivasal enjoy the scenic beauty of Attukad Waterfalls. You will found it in full glory once monsoon arrived.

Blossom International Park

Spread over 16 acres of land area, the Blossom International Park welcomes tourists among much of greenery and thousands varieties of flowers. You can also enjoy here boating, cycling, roller skating and of course cuisine too.

Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary

Love birds and bees? Come to Chinnar wildlife sanctuary on SH 17 in the Marayoor and Kanthalloor Panchayats of Idukki district. An ideal destination for trekking and enjoy watching wildlife. You will get to see here 34 species of mammals and 245 species of birds. The endangered Grizzled giant squirrel lives here.

Tea Plantations

Smell real fragrance of tea together with wind coming from tea gardens in Munnar. Go to hillsides in Munnar where tea plantations are in plenty. Enjoy a walk, see how people work there picking tea for you and catch a glimpse of nature in your camera.

Lakkom Water Falls

The Lakkom Water Falls is a famous tourist attraction situated 25 km from Munnar. This makes part of Eravikulam National Park.

Anayirangal dam

The name says it all. "Anayirangal" in Malayalam means "the place where elephants arrive". You can often spot wild elephants in the reservoir area here. If you love to watch wild elephants, there is no better place than Anayirangal dam in Munnar. There are plenty of space for you to park the car and watch the elephants from pretty close but still at a safe distance.
