Tourist attractions in Mattupetty

The major tourist attractions in this place are the dam, lake and boating. Also, it is an excellent place for picnics.

Mattupetty dam

The dam is located in the Mattupetty lake, on the way to the boating place and most tourists stop by this place to take photos and enjoy the view.

This concrete dam was constructed as part of the Pallivasal Hydro-electric project in the late 1940s for conserving water and generating power. Currently, the dam and the catchment area is a habitat for several species of animals, birds and varieties of fish.

Boating in the lake

Just drive a little bit further and you will reach the boating area in the lake. The main attraction of this place is the lake itself. The still water in the lake gives an amazing reflection of the tea gardens and woods around the lake. The serene beauty of the hillocks and lush green trees will take you to a different world altogether and make your mind and body rejuvenated. The boating area is a great picnic spot as well.

Boating in Mattupetty Lake
This is one of the best lakes I have ever seen. It's not just the clean fresh water but the amazing beauty set by the hillocks and valleys in the background that make this place a unique picnic spot. Boating in this lake is worth an experience.

District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) provides different types of boating, which includes speed boats, motor boats, row boats, pedal boats etc.

Indo Swiss diary farm project (Mattupetty farm)

This was my favorite attraction in Mattupetty. But unfortunately, they closed this place for visitors few years ago. Even though the farm is still functioning, they don't allow visitors. The Indo Swiss farm project was started in 1963 as part of an agreement between the governments of India and Switzerland. Hundreds of high yield cattle of Swizz breeds were present here, which was worth a visit. I had visited the farmland during my school days (more than 20 years ago) and I still remember the sight of huge cattle, which I have never seen before or after that visit.

Mattupetty Dam is not open for tourists? Keep hearing like this. I had visited decades back when Munnar was just an estate town. The journey through Munnar-Kodaikanal highway from topstation was enthralling. This highway is now closed due to being considered congested bison corridor in India.
