Recently some of our friends went on a trip to Munnar and what made this trip memorable was, they all went on two wheelers. I missed this trip since I had some other plans and also because I thought it's not worth riding a bike all the way up to Munnar, which was more than 100 km from my place. However, according to my friends who came back after the trip, I really missed a great experience.

Let's come back to the topic. If you want to drive a bike through the hilly roads in Munnar, you don't have to ride a bike all the way there. It would be safer to go on a bus or car and then hire a bike there. Munnar has several agencies renting two wheelers on daily or weekly rent. More than convenience, renting a bike is a cheaper option to explore Munnar than renting a car.

Be aware that Munnar is a mountain region and the roads are steep and narrow in many places. If you are riding a two wheeler, drive safely. Focus on the road and not the scenery when you are driving.

Gokulam Bike Rental

This agency is located at a walking distance from the KSRTC bus stand near Munnar town. Or, you can make a phone call and they will pick you up from the bus stand.

They offer a few bikes and scooters including Bajaj Pulsar, Honda Activa, Royal Enfield etc. The rent per day is Rs 400 for Pulsar, Rs 350 for Activa and Rs 800 for the Enfield.

To rent a bike, you need to give a copy of your license and a valid id proof. Also, you need to sign an agreement in the prescribed form as provided by the Motor Vehicles Department.

Rental hours: 9am to 6pm

If you hire the two wheeler for 1 day, you need to return it before 6pm. If you are renting it for multiple days, you can keep the bike with you and return it before 6 pm on the last day.

Is it safe to ride a bike in Munnar?

It may be risky to ride a two wheeler in the hill roads unless you are familiar with the area. The bike rental agents in Munnar will give you some tips and guidance on how to drive safely in the hill roads. Follow the guidelines strictly to avoid accidents. Fog may appear unexpectedly in many parts of Munnar and driving without fog light is dangerous at those times. If the roads are not clearly visible, stop your vehicle and wait until the fog disappears.

It is better to finish sight seeing before sunset and relax in your room. If you like to make the best use of your time, you may start early in the morning and go around the places before it start getting crowded.

Avoid driving in the narrow hill roads while intoxicated. It's not only a crime but it is life threatening as well.

Remember to fill your fuel tank since you won't find many petrol bunks in Munnar.
