Thiruvananthapuram district is the southernmost district of Kerala state. The headquarters of this district is in Thiruvananthapuram city which is the largest city of Kerala and also the capital of the state. It is the second most populous district in the state. It has three major rivers, several freshwater lakes and nearly 300 ponds. The district has derived its name from the deity of the Hindu Temple located at the centre of the city which is one of the main attractions in Thiruvananthapuram. The meaning of this word Thiruvananthapuram is Abode of Lord Anantha. It is the densest district in Kerala with 1,509 inhabitants per square kilometre. This district is divided into six taluks i.e. Thiruvananthapuram, Neyyattinkara, Chirayinkeezhu, Nedumangadu, Kattakada and Varkala.
