Nedumbarachira Tourism Project First Phase nearing completion


Nedumbarachira is an ancient water body, which is near to Abhayaranyam Zoo in Kaprikkad near Kodanad. This can be one of the kind tourist attraction for tourists visiting Malayattoor, Paniyeli Poru falls and Abhayaranyam Mini Zoo at Kaprikkad. “Chira" in local language Malayalam means Water body.

Nedumbarachira Project Highlights


First phase of the tourism project at Nedumbarachira, Kodanadu is nearing completion. The first phase, with an expenditure of 50 lakhs Rupees has children's park, tourist walk way and pedal boat facilities completed. The total budget for the project is expected to be Rs 1.25 Crore.

Nedumbarachira is a water body spread across 3 acres in size is located in the Vallom-Kodanad route between Alattuchira and Panamkuzhy which is developed as a tourism centre by District Tourism Promotion Council.

The District Tourism Promotion Council has developed Nedumbarachira, a water body spread across 3 acres of land, located in the Vallom-Kodanad route, between Alattuchira and Panamkuzhy for tourism purpose. On the three sides of the Nedumbarachira, walk ways are constructed and the surrounding region of the water body looks beautiful with lawn grass and various fruit tree sapling planted by the DTPC (District Tourism Promotion Council). Nedumbarachira is a centuries old water body is one of the biggest water body in Koovappady Panchayat. From many years, during the traditional harvest festival of Onam in Kerala, Country boat racing is conducted in Nedumbarachira. This water body is also near to Abhayaranyam, Kaprikkad near to Kodanad, once famous for the Elephant Kraal. Nedumbarachira is just 50 metres from the popular Paniyeli Poru waterfalls in the Periyar river. This Chira (Water body) is covered around the periphery using hard rock. As part of the second phase of the project, more facilities will be added to the Nedumbarachira. Facilities to provide lighting in the night time, Room for storing jackets for boat travel and Irrigation facility is going to be implemented on the second phase of the Nedumbarachira project.

The project work is carried on by the public sector company Kerala Electrical and Allied Engineering Company (KEL) for DTPC. Earlier DTPC projects like Ezhattumugham, Thumburmuzhi hanging bridge, reconstruction of Naganchery Mana in Iringole were completed by the same company.

The project progress is assessed by a team led by Perumbavoor MLA Eldhose Kunnappilly. Block panchayath member M P Prakash, Ernakulam District Panchayat Standing Committee Chairman Jancy George, Koovappady Panchayath President Kunjumol Thankappan, Panchayath members P. Shivan, Sabu Pathikkal also attended project progress assessment.
