Wayanad district was formed on 1 November 1980 as the 12th district of Kerala state. It has derived its name from Vayal Nadu which means the land of paddy fields. This district is situated at an elevation of 700 meters to 2100 meters above the sea level. This is one of the most attractive and picturesque districts in the state of Kerala. It is nestled among the mountains of the Western Ghats on the eastern portion of North Kerala. It has three municipal towns i.e. Kalpetta, Sulthan Bathery and Mananthavady. This district stands first in the pepper cultivation and coffee plantation in Kerala state. The culture of Wayanad is mainly tribal – oriented. This district is perhaps one of the biggest foreign exchange earners of the state.
