Alappuzha, also known as Alleppey, is one of the well – known districts in the state of Kerala. The name of this district was officially changed to Alappuzha in the year 1990. This is the smallest district of the state. There are many tourist attractions in Alappuzha and is well – known for its beaches, backwaters, temples, monuments and its coir factories. It is interesting to know that the most of the Kerala’s coir factories are situated in and around this district. This place is a landmark between the broad Arabian Sea and the networks of the river flowing into it. Alappuzha is also known for Chettikulangara Bharani, an important festival of this district which is celebrated in February/ March. Some of the well – known Alappuzha tourist destinations are Alappuzha Beach, Sea View Park, Chavaran Bhawan, Edathua Church etc.
How to Reach
Alappuzha district is well – connected to all the main districts of the state. One can easily reach this place by rail, air, and water.By Rail:
This district has two railway lines i.e. Ernakulam – Kayamkulam coastal railway line and Ernakulam – Kottayam – Kayamkulam railway line.
By Air:
Cochin international airport is the nearest one which is situated at a distance of 78 KM to the north. Apart from this, one can also reach this place from Thiruvananthapuram international airport which is nearly 159 KM to the south.
By Water:
This place is also accessible through waterways due to the presence of backwaters and canals that is one of the main tourist attractions of Alappuzha. National waterway 3 passes through Alappuzha.
