Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the well – known tourist destinations in Kerala region. It is located in the rain shadow region on eastern slopes of Western Ghats, adjoining Tamil Nadu. This area is rich in ethnic cultural heritage and diverse in eco – system. It is a unique thorny scrub forest with lots of xerophytes species. It is a habitat of endangered giant grizzled squirrel of India. Unlike other sanctuaries of Kerala, this one receives less than two months of rain every year. It is a well – known repository of medicinal plants and supports a healthy population of star tortoise, gaur, spotted deer, slender Ioris, wild elephant, leopard, tiger, and many other animals, birds and insects.
Travel Tips
Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary features interpretation center, two eco – shops, amenity center, inspection bungalow, and cafeteria to cater to the needs of tourists. The visitors need to pay a nominal amount of fee. The fee is different for different regions of the sanctuary. For example, to visit Kotter river side, Churulipetty riverside, watch towers, and Thoovanam waterfall trekking, one has to pay Rs 200 (Indian national) and Rs 300 (foreign national). If the tourists wish to stay at ethnic hut which is built in tribal style then they have to pay Rs 4000 for two persons.
