Ponnumthuruthu is also known as Golden Island and is situated near Varkala, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. This tiny island is a famous tourist destination full of serenity. It is a beautiful getaway surrounded by the Anjengo backwaters. Within the dense greenery, a century-old Shiva Parvati temple welcomes the tourists at this island. Sivarathri is a major festival celebrated at the Siva Parvathi temple at Ponnumthuruthu. Visitors can take a boat from Nedunganda and through a backwater route; it will take a 30-minute ride to reach Ponnumthuruthu Island.

A century old Shiva Parvati temple is one of the major attractions of this island. Boats are available in plenty to carry the tourists between the island and the temple. Sunset viewing is most enjoyable from this place. The island is also the place where some Hindu devotees conduct the last rites of their near and dear ones.
