Ponnumthuruthu is also known as Golden Island and is situated near Varkala, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. This tiny island is a famous tourist destination full of serenity. It is a beautiful getaway surrounded by the Anjengo backwaters. Within the dense greenery, a century-old Shiva Parvati temple welcomes the tourists at this island. Sivarathri is a major festival celebrated at the Siva Parvathi temple at Ponnumthuruthu. Visitors can take a boat from Nedunganda and through a backwater route; it will take a 30-minute ride to reach Ponnumthuruthu Island.

How to Reach

The Varkala railway station is the nearest one which is 5 KM away from the Ponnumthuruthu Island. The Trivandrum international airport is the nearest airport which is about 30 KM from this spectacular place. Tourists have to board a country boat from Nedunganda and take a tour through the backwaters for about 30 minutes to reach Ponnumthuruthu.

Activities

A century old Shiva Parvati temple is one of the major attractions of this island. Boats are available in plenty to carry the tourists between the island and the temple. Sunset viewing is most enjoyable from this place. The island is also the place where some Hindu devotees conduct the last rites of their near and dear ones. Along with this, there are a lot of other places to be explored in the nearby region such as Varkala Lighthouse, Janardhanaswami Temple, KaduvayilJama Masjid, Kappil Lake, Varkala Tunnel, Varkala Beach, Papasnanam Beach etc.

The best time to visit this place is between October and March as this area receives abundant rainfall during monsoon season due to its geographical topography. Visit Timings are from Monday to Sunday, 05:30 AM – 12:00 PM and 04:00 PM to 07:00 PM.
