Idukki is one of the famous districts in the state of Kerala and is well – known for its mountainous hills and dense forests. This district lies in the Western Ghats of Kerala and is the second largest district in terms of area. Rugged mountains and forests cover almost 97% area of Idukki district. It is the first district in India to get connected with super – fast broadband system as a part of digital India. It was formed on 26 January 1972. At the time of formation, the district headquarters started functioning at Kottayam and from there; it was shifted to Painavu in the year 1976. There are many tourist attractions in Idukki. Some of the best Idukki tourist destinations are Munnar, Vagamon, Idukki dam, Idukki wildlife sanctuary, Periyar Tiger Reserve etc.

The National Highway 49 (Cochin – Dhanushkodi Highway) and State highways 13 and 33 passes through this district.

Currently, there is no railway station in this district. The nearest railway stations are Aluva junction (100 KM away from Idukki district) and Kottayam junction (128.1 KM away from Idukki).
By Air
The nearest airport is Cochin international airport which is situated at a distance of 96 KM from this district via Neriamangalam – Painavu road.
