Pathanamthitta is the youngest district in the state of Kerala. This district has a border with Tamil Nadu state in the east. Due to a large number of pilgrim centres, this place is also known as the headquarters of pilgrimage tourism. This district is also the third least populous district in the state as according to the 2001 census of India. Pathanamthitta has been also declared first polio – free district in India. Its name is the combination of two Malayalam words Pathanam and thitta which together means an array of houses on the riverside. The district was formed on 1 November 1982. Its formation was done by incorporating the portions of the erstwhile Kollam, Alappuzha, and Idukki districts. It is interesting to know that this district is one of the richest districts in India. It is divided into three natural geographical regions i.e. highland, midland, and lowland. This district has a unique position in the inland fisheries map of the Kerala state.

How to Reach

By Road:
Pathanamthitta district is well – connected to the major national and state highways. National highway 220 and state highways 1, 5, 7, 8 are the major highways that connect Pathanamthitta to other districts of the state.

By Rail:
Tiruvalla railway station is the only station within the district which connects Pathanamthitta to other towns and cities of the state.

By Air:
If visitors prefer airways then Trivandrum international airport is the nearest one. This airport is around 119 KM away from this place.

Pathanamthitta district can be visited at any time of the year but the best time for Pathanamthitta tourism is from September to March. During this time, the weather is extremely pleasant to explore this enchanting land.
