Monsoon travel in India is itself an experience, there will even be discounts on air-tickets. But safety is the biggest concern while travelling to India during Monsoons, especially during family trips. Heavy rainfalls, wind, landslides, etc. can be expected; and there are chances that tourist spots at some of the popular destinations like Kerala, and trekking routes won't be open during monsoon season. But, a houseboat cruise during monsoon will be surely thrilling!

I am from Mangalore, Karnataka. During monsoon we usually visit Coorg area to enjoy the weather and also for the lush green forest.

The western ghats can also be visited. Mangalore, my hometown, is also a great place to visit. Nice beaches, decent weather (Mangalore is generally hot throughout the year) and excellent food - although the variety of seafood isn't great during monsoon.

Do try the Gheeroast here and also learn about the Mangalore culture and heritage.
