To plan a travel, how early can we book a hotel?

As we generally come to know when our vacations are going to arrive, we have in our mind to plan a travel right at the moment we get to see the holiday list. For too much rush in the peak seasons, we don't get places in hotels after reaching there, even one month before the hotels show unavailability of rooms due to prior booking. The train tickets also get filled up very fast nowadays. Seeing all this we wanted to plan this time really early. But after going to sites like yatra.com or cleartrip.com, they say "you are planning it too early" when I searched for May.
So is there any ideal time when we should start the booking process, if we want to plan a trip comfortably?

One week before travelling we can book the hotel and that too in season. In off-season you can get rooms easily.

Planing ahead is an important part of any activity. But planing too early for travel may also cause problems, i.e. you may have to cancel. The timing , which is too early and which is not depends on the factors such as destination you are planing for, the mode of travel, the duration of your stay etc. For example, if you are planing to visit a place which near to you for 2-3 days only, in off season and you are going by your own vehicle, all that you have to plan is what you pack. You don't have to book anything early, if you want you may do it one or two days back. But if you are planing for foreign destination you may have to plan well ahead.

In peak seasons the demands for booking of hotels is too high and rarely you will get rooms. Also the rooms are booked in advance and no rooms are left empty. You can book your hotel online before two months of more and can also book up to 2 hours before check in hotel or just visit hotel at the time of check in and they can give your occupancy (subject to availability).

Some foreign tourist plan to visit our country or other country and plan their trips before more than two months and while applying visa and other formalities and these formalities can require to give the stay proof of stay during tour to the authorities.

I just want to add one more point here,

The website Booking.com provides great offers/deals to book the rooms. You can go ahead and Reserve the rooms without paying anything (Sometimes you need to give the Debit/Credit card details which is totally safe as per my last experience). Also you will get Free cancellation in case you may have to cancel the booking. Please refer to website for more details.

So, I would suggest you to think of this option also if you are planning your trip too early.

I think Makemytrip.com has also started this type of booking.

Actually, it depends on a lots of things like the season, time, and etc. Think like you are going on a trip for goa in May or June and you are thinking you can book your hotel on the spot then wooooh , you are going to sad and disappointed because in May and June goa is on fire tourist comes there from all over the world. which make it's important to book a hotel at least 1 week before you are landing there.

As early as the online portals are allowing you to book.
The more early you book the hotels online the more discount and offers you get on your bookings.
So it's better to book early so that you can avoid unavailability and can avail discounts :)

Agree with Rishabh. Early booking will give some cost advantage in most cases. But it can be the other way too in some cases. Look for last-minute deals and hotels may sell out unsold inventory very cheap in some cases.

Actually it depends, if you are planning to go on peak season then i will definately suggest you to book hotel atleast 2-3 months prior to holidays. But if you are going on off season then you could also book hotel on spot.

If you are going to any popular destination then there has planty of hotels and homestays so you could avoid advance booking but if it is off beat destination and very few hotel or homestays are there so you should arrange stay in advance.

It will also depend on your knowledge and experience on that place, if you went there previously and you have many contacts then you could just make a call before start of your journey thats it but if you are going there for the first time and you do not have any prior expertise on it then book it in advance.

Last but not the least if you and planning for a Honeymoon trip or a Leasure trip the always go for advance booking atleast 2-3 months so that it qould be hassel free and you will get stay for your dream holiday destinations as per your preferences.

For advance booking you could prefer online hotel booking sites like GoIbibo, MakeMyTrip, Yatra etc.
Also you could prefer local hotel booking agents if you have someone trustable.

But if you plan to book hotel on spot then keep some contacts from friends or families who went there earlier or research on your own before arrival and take assistance from online blog and forum as well as travel groups.
