My experience with Akanta Ayurveda and Yoga, Cherai - Ayurveda Resort in Kerala
I recently visited and experienced the Akanta Ayurvedic resort cum hospital in Cherai, Kerala and really enjoyed their facilities. Check out this blog to learn more about what I experienced there.
A Rare Ayurvedic Escape Between Ocean and Backwaters – My Stay at Akanta, Cherai
As someone who has spent my entire life living and travelling across Kerala, its serene backwaters, lush hill stations, and countless Ayurvedic retreats, I thought I had seen it all. But my recent visit to Akanta Ayurveda and Yoga Cherai with my wife and son proved me wrong in the most refreshing way possible.
I visited Akanta Ayurvedic Resort, Cherai, in April 2026, the peak of the summer season in Kerala. Read more about my experience with this one of the best ayurvedic resorts in Kerala. First Impressions: Location That Feels made for Relaxation
Nestled in Cherai, one of Kerala's most beloved beach destinations, Akanta Ayurvedic Resort sits in a location that's nothing short of extraordinary. On one side, you have the golden sands and rhythmic waves of Cherai Beach. On the other side, the tranquil backwaters stretch endlessly, dotted with fishing boats and traditional Chinese fishing nets. I've stayed at many Ayurvedic resorts, but none can truly claim this rare "between two waters" setting.
And the best part? It's all just about an hour's drive from Cochin International Airport and Ernakulam Railway station, making it easily accessible. Not a Spa but a True Ayurvedic Experience
Let me be clear: if you're looking for a quick massage parlour experience, this is not your place.
Akanta is an authentic Ayurvedic hospital-cum-resort. With multiple in-house qualified doctors in Ayurveda, the focus here is on real healing, not just relaxation. Each treatment is prescribed after proper consultation, and you can feel the difference immediately.
As an IT professional who spends long hours glued to a chair and screen, I opted for a full-body Ayurvedic treatment program. The therapies were deeply rejuvenating. Honestly, I haven't felt this relaxed in months. My wife and I both agreed: this wasn't just a short-term escape; it felt like resetting our bodies for the long run.Architecture, Rooms, and Space to Breathe
The property itself is divided into two main buildings. The traditional Kerala-style main block, rich with woodwork and natural cooling, faces the beach. Waking up to the sound of waves and catching sunsets right from the room will be unforgettable.
The second building overlooks the backwaters, offering serene sunrise views and gentle breezes. We chose the backwater-facing room. Our room was surprisingly spacious, far larger than standard hotel rooms, and perfect for stretching, yoga, or just unwinding.
A quick tip: go for an AC room. Kerala's humidity can be intense, especially if you're not used to it. And the summer is really hot here. Green Spaces and Healing Ambience
What really stood out was how thoughtfully the environment has been designed. The entire property is wrapped in greenery - medicinal plants, fruit trees, flowering shrubs, and shaded walkways. There's even a beautiful lotus pool filled with vibrant blooms, which adds a calming visual charm.
Walking through the grounds during the day, under the shade of trees, felt therapeutic in itself.Treatments, Yoga, and Daily Rhythm
Beyond treatments, Akanta integrated wellness into our daily routine. They offer regular yoga sessions, which both locals and guests can join. You can also request personalised sessions if you're undergoing treatment.
The treatment rooms themselves follow traditional Kerala architecture - simple, functional, and ideal for authentic therapies.Food That Heals (and Also Satisfies)
The in-house restaurant and the chef deserve a mention. For patients, meals are curated based on doctors' advice - light, nutritious, and aligned with Ayurvedic principles. For others, there's a good variety of regular dishes as well. My son opted for Chinese food and really liked their preparations.
It strikes a nice balance, especially when travelling with family members who may not be on a strict treatment plan.Leisure and Surroundings
While Akanta isn't packed with entertainment options (which is kind of the point), there's a small game area with table tennis and board games. But honestly, the real "activities" here are the treatments, yoga, and simply soaking in the surroundings.
A short drive takes you deeper into nearby villages where life revolves around the sea, an experience that feels raw and authentic.
Step outside, and you're instantly in a vibrant fishing village environment. Watching fishermen at work, seeing Chinese fishing nets in action, and even chatting with locals adds a cultural richness to the stay. During our stay, we met a fisherman's family who make their living from catching and selling fish. They don't own a boat, so they use a small fishing net handmade by them. Every day, they catch 2-3 Kgs of fish and sell them in front of their house. Local tourists buy fish directly from them. Their son goes to a nearby government school, and his dream is to own a large fishing boat. I told him we will come back here 10 years later to see his dream come true. Backwater Boating & Poolside Relaxation
Akanta also arranges small boating experiences directly from their private jetty on the backwaters. It's a peaceful ride, perfect for slowing down and taking in the scenery.
The swimming pool, overlooking the backwaters, became a favourite spot for my son. While we were taking the treatments, he was enjoying his time in the pool. He even got a new friend - Mr. Mat, who came from Switzerland for a 2-week treatment at Akanta. With seating areas built right into the pool, it's designed for long, lazy hours. There used to be a poolside food service setup, though it seems they've scaled that back, likely to maintain hygiene.
Practical Notes Before You Go
The resort has a limited number of rooms, so booking in advance is a smart move, especially in the peak season (October to February).
Yoga Centre where daily Yoga sessions are conducted for room guests, patients and visitors
There's ample parking space if you're driving in. It's easily accessible from the main beach road - you can literally walk across to the beach anytime.Final Thoughts: Why Akanta Stands Out
Kerala, often called God's Own Country, is filled with Ayurvedic resorts. Many are luxurious, some are touristy, and a few are truly authentic.
Akanta belongs firmly in that last category. It combines the credibility of a genuine Ayurvedic treatment centre with the comfort of a peaceful resort—all set in one of the most unique locations I've experienced.
Whether you're visiting Kerala as a tourist curious about Ayurveda, or someone actively seeking treatment and long-term wellness, this place offers both - without the heavy price tag often associated with such experiences.
For me, it wasn't just a stay. It was a reset. Thanks to the entire team at Akanta for making our stay a pleasant and relaxing experience.
