In the year 1630 AD, Shivaji's father Shahaji Bhonsale has built the Lal Mahal palace for his wife Jijabai and his son. Shivaji stayed here for several years till he captured his first fort. The original Lal Mahal is ruined and the current Lal Mahal is a reconstruction of the original and located in the center of the Pune city. The original Lal Mahal was built with the idea of rejuvenating the recently razed city of Pune when Dadoji Kondev entered the city along with Shivaji and his mother Jijabai. Shivaji grew up here till he captured the fort of Torna in the year 1645. Lal Mahal at Pune was ruined at the end of 17th century and was razed to ground due to the various attacks on the Pune city in those days. It is believed that some soil and stones of Lal Mahal were used during the construction of Shaniwar Wada.
The records of the Peshwas mention that the Lal Mahal palace, Pune was used for arranging for arranging the feasts for the Brahmins during the thread-ceremony of Sadoba, son of Chimajiappa. This is the place where Shivaji Maharaj cut Shaistekhan's fingers when he was trying to escape from the window of the Lal Mahal.
The current Lal Mahal was built only on the part of the land of the original Lal Mahal. This new Lal Mahal was not rebuilt in the same fashion as the original Lal Mahal. The current Lal Mahal at Pune was rebuilt by Pune Municipal Corporation in the year 1998 and lot of renovation works were carried out by Pune Municipal corporation.Attractions of Lal Mahal, Pune
Four Umbrellas on roof is the main attraction of this place. There are a number of collections of Shivaji and Jijabai's pictorial representations in Lal Mahal palace at Pune. One of the impressive picture is that of young Shivaji plowing land with a golden plough and Jijabai and Guru Dadoji Konddev looking at him.
Another attraction here is four umbrellas on its terrace and a statue of Jijabai. There is a beautiful garden in the Lal Mahal palace, which is called Jija matha Garden. Now it is converted into Children's park. The famous statue of Jijabai ( Shivaji's mother) still adorns this place. Visitors can see the statues of great Maratha leader, Shivaji in his youth. We can enjoy with families at the Jijamata garden which is now a recreational park for children. The popularity of this place influenced many tourists to visit this famous historical place in Pune.
