Basilica of Bom Jesus is the well known tourist destination of old Goa in India. Old Goa was the capital city of the Portuguese when they ruled Goa. The church is famous for the fact that St Francis Xavier's mortal remains are kept in the mausoleum of the church.

Basilica De Bom Jesus is one of the tourist attractions of the city of Old Goa in the state of Goa in India. Basilica De Bom Jesus was built in 1605 and the church has become famous through out the world for the fact that tha mortal remains of St Francis Xavier is kept here.

About the mausoleum of St Francis Xavier at Basilica of Bom Jesus


St Francis is considered by the catholics as one of the patron saints of Goa. Even after 400 years the body of St Francis Xavier is still in a good shape, the fact which is puzzling for many a scientist of the recent times. Once in a decade the body is taken out and kept for for public display and the last such display was in 2004.

About the Architecture at Bom Jesus Basilica


The Basilica was constructed in 1605 is in Portuguese style with a mesmarising architecture. This Basilica De Bom Jesus is a UNESCO world heritage site. The Basilica is located in Old Goa which was the capital city during the Portugusese rule. This is one of the oldest churches in India (also see Ancient Churches in Chennai) and is carpeted with marble flooring inlaid with precious stones. Except for the gilded altars inside the church, the interior has been kept simple.
There are paintings on the walls of the church, about the incidents taken from the life of St Francis Xavier. The mausoleum with the silver casket on top was the gift of the Grand Duke of Tuscany , Medicis Cosmo III. The mausoleum was designed by Giovanni Battista Foggini a 17th century painter from Florentine and it took about 10 years to complete. There is a Bom Jesus Basilica.

How to Reach the Basilica of Bom Jesus


The nearest airport to the Basilica of Bom Jesus is the Dabolim Airport which is 30 kilomters away. The airport has frequent and regular flights from Mumbai, Chennai. Delhi, Bangalore and Kochi.

The two railway stations in Goa, Vasco da gama and Margao are well connected with almost all the cities in India. You can reach Goa through trains and then take a taxi or bus transport to reach the Basilica.

Old Goa is well connected by Bus transport, inter state and state transport. You will be able to reach the basilica from any part of Goa easily through bus services. If not, there are tour operators in Goa who can help by arranging cabs or buses.
