Church of Our Lady of Rosary, built in the 16th century is one of the oldest churches in the state of Goa. This church has got an imposing structure which is liked by one and all and the so the most visited churches in the state of Goa.

History of the Church


The church stands on the very spot from where Alphonso de Albuquerque as the Governor of the Portuguese India stood and witnessed the conquest of Goa in 1510. Alphonso De Albuquerque was a Portuguese naval general officer, under whose military and administrative activities as second governor of Portuguese India, the Portuguese conquered and established their colonial empire in India.

Architecture of the Church


The church is built in Manueline style of Architecture which was a mix of renaissance and later Gothic styles. The church has got the most austere simplicity of the exterior which stands completely in contrast to the rich Gothic decorations of the interiors.

Wooden beams support the the roof of the church and the porch has two stories with the round shaped towers on both sides of the facade.

Inside the church, there are 2 chapels and 3 altars where main one is dedicated to Nossa Senhora de Rozario that is ,Our Lady of the Rosary. the church was old Goa's parish church from 1543 and it is believed that St Francis preached here in the evenings. The interiors of the church has influences from other religions, for example the main altar has cashews, flowers and mangoes designed on it. There is an empty tomb of dona Caterina wife of Viceroy Garicia De Sa whose marriage was conducted by St Francis Xavier. there is a vase here which has motifs from the Gujarati style of art.

Location of the Church


The Church of Our Lady of the Rosary is located near the Dom Jesus and when you climb the hill from the basilica you will be able to see the church. The church is located on the western side of the Holy hill of Old Goa.

How to Reach


You have to reach the Dabolim airport or one of the two railway stations in Goa. Then you can easily reach Old Goa which is about 15 - 20 minutes drive in a taxi or a bus. If you are travelling by bus you will get dropped off the Basilica of Bom Jesus . You can get into an auto rickshaw which will take you to the church

Since Panaji is just 15 minutes drive away, you can always stay at the capital city and then drive to Old Goa.
