Mangueshi Temple is located in Mangueshim in Priol, Ponda Taluka in the state of Goa India. This 400n year old temple is fast becoming one of the tourist attractions of the state of Goa as well as Margao for its simple but elegant architecture.

History of the Mangueshi Temple


The 400 year old Mangueshi temple is dedicated to Lord shiva, present at the temple in the form of Lord Mangueshi and as the Kuladevta of many Hindus in Goa, including Saraswath Brahmins. It is believed that Lord Brahma consecrated the mangesh Linga on the mountain of Mangireesh on the banks of the river Bhagirathi. The Saraswath Brahmins brought the linga from there to trihotrapuri in the state of Bihar and then carried it with them to Gomantaka and settled at Mathgrama the present day Madgaon /Margao. They established their sacred Mangueshi temple on the banks of the river Gomati / Zuari as it is called nowadays. This is also the Kuladevta of Many brahmins of the area namely Goud saraswath Brahmins, Karhade Brahmins and Bhandaris.

The temple had actually been at Kushasthali Cortalim a village in Salcete of the present days fell to the invading Portuguese and conversions were started. In a bid to save the temple from the imminent destruction the idol was removed and kept in a temple priest's house for sometime before it was finally installed in Priol the current place .

Architecture of the Mangueshi temple


This temple at Margao is very well known for its simple but elegant structure is noted for its pillars which are considered to be the most beautiful ones in the whole of the state of Goa. there is a Nandi Bull and a seven storeyed Deepasthamba stands at the gate of the temple complex. The temple has a water tank which is said to be the oldest part of the temple complex. You can find chandeliers of the 19th century in the Sabha Griha a spacious hall which can accommodate 500 people. The sabha griha leads to the Garbha Griha, the sanctum sanctorum of the Lord. Shrines for other deities like Parvati, Ganesha, Nandikeshwar, Gajana, Bhagavati and the Grama purusha Deva of the Vatsa Gotra are also there. Ancient stone devtas namely Mulakeshwar, Virabhadra, Lakshminarayana, Shantadurga and Kalabhairav are made in stone and are housed in the subsidiary shrines to the rear of the building .

How to Reach


To go to Mangueshi temple you have to reach Goa either at Dabolim airport or at the railway stations. The temple is easily accessible after you reach Goa. You can have taxis, private or the local Bus transport and autos as well.
