Much before the Portuguese came to India, Goa was ruled by the Sultan of Bijapur. You will still find many inscriptions recording the conquests of Sultan Adil Shah. This Deccan king commissioned many of the mosques to be built in Goa. He built atleast 26 mosques in the year 1560. The biggest of them was the Safa Shahouri Masjid. It is also the oldest amongst all the mosques. The masjid was a part of an exclusive garden complex with a sprawling garden. The whole area has been destroyed. If you are passing the Bangalore Panjim highway you might chance upon the ruins. A short bus ride from Panjim will take you to the bus stand in Ponda. Jama Masjid, Goa is a relatively new prayer hall. Nothing much is known of the old Jama Masjid.
The new Jama Masjid, Goa is located in the Sangeum area in Goa.This small town is 26 kilometers from Margao. It was renovated in 1959 A.D.The new structure though simple, is elegant and compact. There is a proportion in its structure. The entrance has two lofty towers. In the center of the Jama Masjid, Goa there is a dome shaped kiosk which rises sky ward. There are four ornamented minarets as in all masjids.

The Gate Of The College of St Paul is a significant architectural find in the sense it was one of the premium Jesuit institution in India. Another important monument in Goa is the the Gate of the Palace of Adil Shah. What was once part of a splendid palace, and garden now stands derelict. Only the gateway is there to tell the forgotten story of the rogue deccan sultan of Bijapur. The Pillory in Old Goa is another structure that you must see. This derelict and forgotten place, where even tourists think twice to venture, was once the city square. Offenders were punished and whipped here. It was in use till the fag end of the 17th century and the main law giving procedures were centered around it. The stone pillar of the Pillory is made of basalt and is originally said to have belonged to a Hindu temple. It was plundered from there and placed in the town center. The Viceroy's arch is another structure that is a must see. was an important public monument to the Portuguese. Supposedly all the viceroys received their ceremonial key to the city of Goa underneath this very arch. This is the same old road that leads to the other monuments close by. The grand march of the viceroy with pomp and procession can still be imagined.
The new structure of the Jama Masjid is significantly noted for its elegant simplicity and harmonious proportions.
The entrance facade of the Jama Masjid has two towers, which are surmounted by pillared kiosks. The Jama Masjid also has four minarets and from the centre of these a dome-shaped kiosk rises.
A lot of devotees celebrate their festivals here with due solemnity and are often seen rejoicing.
