Honey Bee tree in Munnar | Munnar Tourist Attractions

Honey Bee Tree is an interesting attraction in Munnar. It is a huge tree with lot of honey bee hives hanging from the top of the tree. Read this blog to learn more about the location of Honey Bee Spot and find some interesting photos.

The Honey Bee Tree is located along the Munnar - Mattuppetty road and it is worth spending a few minutes there. It's a pretty big tree with several beehives hanging on the branches.

Honey Bee Tree - MunnarSince this is on the way to other attractions in Munnar, you don't need to drive very far to see this.

We have visited Munnar few times in the past, but never bothered to stop at this location, even though we heard of this tree before. But this time, on our way from Tea Country Resort to Mattupetty dam, our driver Johnychettan suggested us to get out of the car and take a look at the tree. It was really interesting to watch the huge hives.

Location

The honey bee tree is located at about 4km from Munnar town, along the Mattupetty route. Since this is along the side of the main road, most of the visitors will stop by and spend a few minutes watching the honey bees and the hives. Also, this is a very interesting view point to enjoy the natural beauty of Munnar. A good way to explore Munnar hills is to rent a Motorcycle or Scooter in Munnar and go through the unexplored trails around the place.

An interesting thing to note is, all the hives are on a single tree and there are not a even a single hive on any other nearby trees. It is not known why the bees chose only this tree to build their nests. According to one of the traveler we met there, the honey bees love the smell of the flower of that tree, which is why they picked it to build their homes. But our travel guide didn't really agree on this theory and he insisted that the reason is "unknown" :-)

This was one of the interesting attractions in our recent backpacking trip to Munnar. If you are planning a visit to Munnar, keep aside a few minutes to stop by and enjoy the creativity of the wild honeybees. Johnychettan, our driver-cum-tourist guide, claims there are small beehives near his homestay named LizMerry Casa Homestay, even though they are not as big and interesting as this one.

Don't forget to visit places like Anayirangal dam, Eravikulam National Park, Tea Museum, Rose garden, Dream Land Spices Park etc. Unfortunately, there are no Uber and Ola cabs in Munnar. If you like, you may hire a bike and go around the places yourself. If you are looking for night life, you will need to go to the town.

This kind of small things are very interesting. While visiting Munnar, we have had our few share of surprises with the spotting of random elephant herds on the outskirts of the city and the second was when we spot a large Malabar giant Squirrel.
Any recommendations for ideal trekking spots which are close to Munnar town?
