Unique temples of Tamil Nadu

This article is about the uniqueness of temples which are in the hill top and also talks about the famous significant nava (nine) in our mythology in Tamil Nadu and where I have made a visit.

Murugan Temple

Mostly people like to visit temples and hill temples are always a nice visit. In Tamil Nadu, people believe that on every hill top, big or small, a temple of Murugan will always be there. I just wanted to list those temples which I have visited.

  1. Tiruttani in Tiruvallur District nearer to Chennai.
  2. Marudamalai in Coimbatore District
  3. Chennimalai and Sivanmalai in Erode District.
  4. Panpozhi near Sengottai in Tirunelveli District.
  5. Palani in Dindigul District.
  6. Swamimalai in Kumbakonam District.
  7. Pazhamudhircholai in Madurai District.
  8. Kodaikanal in Dindigul District.
  9. Yellagiri in Vellore District

  10. Vinayagar Temple- Uchipillayar Koil in Trichirappalli District

Sivan Temple- Velliangiri hills in Coimbatore District. Since it is a forest, only men are allowed on the top to go by walk but others can see the temple from down below. Agasthiar Temple in Papanasam which also features agasthiar falls, is a a real treat on the podhigai hills.

Vishnu Temple

  1. Thirumalaivaiyavur in Kancheepuram District nearer to Chenglepet
  2. Sholinger in Vellore District
  3. Thiruneermalai in Kancheepuram District nearer to Chennai

The temples at
1) Singaperumal Koil(Vishnu temple), Kancheepuram District
2) Tirupparankundram (Murugan temple), Madurai District
3) Tiruvannamalai (Sivan Temple), Vellore District
are the other unique sites. The shrines are on the hills themselves and are so famous for making rounds of the hills (it is called Girivalam) which is done especially during full moon days and also on other days.

Uniqueness of the number nine(Nava)

There are three kinds of nava temples in Tamil Nadu
  1. Navathiruppathi (Vishnu Temples)in Tuticorin District
  2. Navakailasam (Sivan Temples) in Tirunelveli & Tuticorin Districts
  3. Navagraham (Nine grahas temples) in Tanjore District.


One cannot finish this trip in a day as the distance is about 100 kms; it may take two or three days.

  2. Cheranmahadevi
  3. Kodaganallur
  4. Kunnathur
  5. Murappanadu
  6. Srivaikuntam
  7. Thenthirupperai
  8. Rajapathi
  9. Cherndhamangalam


The trip to these temples will take two to three days as the distance between the temples are more.
  1. Suriyanarkovil Chandran - Sun
  2. Thingaloor – Moon
  3. Alangudi – Guru
  4. Thirunageswaram – Raghu
  5. Thiruvenkadu – Budhan
  6. Kanjanoor - Sukran
  7. Keezhaperumpallam – Kedhu
  8. Thirunallaru – Sani
  9. Vaitheeswaran Kovil - Sevvai
