Taxi rates from Cochin Airport to Munnar

If you are planning to spend a few days in Munnar but do not want to keep a car all the time while you are in Munnar, your best option is to hire a one-way taxi to Munnar. Distance from Ernakulam to Munnar is about 140 km (125km from Airport). Typical taxi rate is Rs 13 per km for one way, which can go up to Rs 17 per km, depending on the type of the car and the agency you approach. Even if you hire a taxi for one way, you still have to pay for the return fare, which will make it about 270 km.

So, if you are planning to take a taxi to get dropped at Munnar, your estimated cost would be about Rs 3,500, which may go up further for bigger cars like Innova.

Rent a car

Renting a car in Cochin Airport just to get dropped at Munnar may not be the best option for most people. You may need to depend on local cabs to go around in Munnar and also you will need to take another long taxi drive to return from Munnar. Considering all these expenses, it may be much cheaper to hire a cab for a few days on a daily rent basis.

Daily rent for a cab is between Rs 1,300 to Rs 2,000, depending on the type of the car and your negotiation skills. There will be an additional driver bata of Rs 250 per day.

The best advantage of renting a car is, you can use the same car for local tours in and around Munnar and thus save cost. Most rental cars will have a daily limit of 80 to 100 km per day and you will have to pay additional charges for excess travel.

Package tours with car

A more convenient option would be to book a car as part of your travel package. There are plenty of travel agencies in Kerala, offering you flexible travel plans. You can ask them to include a car in the package. The best advantage of such package tours is, they will plan your trip according to your interests and schedule. You don't have to waste any time looking for cab booking or checking out for places.

The primary advantage of all-inclusive tour packages is, everything will be taken care for you including the travel. You will be able to enjoy your vacation to the best without worrying about reservations or travel.

However, package tours are not the best option for budget-conscious travellers. Most package tours come at a premium price. If you are on a tight budget, you will be able to save costs by booking your own cab and hotels.

Which is the best option - hire a taxi, rent a car or choose a package tour?

If you don't care about spending some extra money for the sake of comfortable and worry-free holidays, package tours through reputed travel agencies are the best option. However, if you are on a tight budget, I would recommend you hire a taxi without going through any tour operators. When you hire a taxi through the tour operators, they will take a commission from the cab operators. By booking directly with the cab owners, you can negotiate and save on this commission cost.

Public transport to Munnar

Tea-plantations are not the only attractions in Munnar. Don't forget to visit places like Anayirangal dam, Eravikulam National Park, Tea Museum, Honey Bee Tree, Rose garden etc. Unfortunately, there are no Uber and Ola cabs in Munnar. If you like, you may hire a bike and go around the places yourself. If you are looking for night life, you will need to go to the town.

If you have some time in Kochi, you may go on a local backwater tour. I recently went on a day tour in a country style wooden boat through the backwaters of Kochi. Read more at Cochin Day Tours
