TTDC Hotel, Kanyakumari - our experience and review
Read my review of TTDC Hotel in Kanyakumari. I have written my experience in this hotel along with few other points you may want to consider while selecting a hotel in Kanyakumari.
If you are looking for budget accommodation facing the beach in Kanyakumari, then TTDC is an option you may want to consider. After the very poorly maintained Kerala Govt. Guest house, this is the closest accommodation facility available to the beach in Kanyakumari.

TTDC Hotel is a pretty large property with a lot of rooms that fit all types of budgets. You can get executive, air-conditioned rooms as well as normal budget rooms. Since there are many rooms, you may be able to walk-in without a reservation. 
I usually prefer walk-in instead of the advance online booking since we get better deals if they have empty rooms. However, that approach will not work out here since this is a government property and they don't offer such discounts to walk-in guests. So, if you are planning to stay in TTDC hotel in Kanyakumari, you can make an advance booking to make sure you will get the room when you arrive there. 
Our stay in TTDC Kanyakumari
During our visit to Thiruvananthapuram, Kovalam and Kanyakumari, we didn't have any hotel reservation just like most of our other travels. We are usually backpackers and it works out pretty well for our travel patterns.
We drove to the beach and looked for the hotels in the area. There were a few small hotels which didn't look suitable for families. Then we noticed the Kerala Govt. House adjacent to the beach. We walked in there and checked with the reception. There were no staff to help us and the whole property appeared to be very poorly maintained. After sometime, we noticed a staff member and he told us that we cannot book a room there since the reservation has to be done in advance from their office in Thiruvananthapuram. More than that, my wife had already noticed dog poop and human feces in the surroundings and she had already made up her mind to look for other places.
Then we saw the Tamilnadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC) Hotel next to it. That was a huge property spread across several acres of land and facing the beach. We drove to the hotel and went to the reception. You can find the hotel room rates here.Friendly staff
Unlike the Kerala guest house, we were greeted by the staff and offered help. We checked the room availability and rates. Staff was very cordial and patiently showed us many rooms until we found a room that satisfies our requirements. We decided to go for a twin cottage facing the beach. 
Clean room and surroundings
This hotel doesn't have a lot of amenities like swimming pool, play area, indoor games etc. But if you are looking for a clean hotel at affordable rates, I would recommend this place. Some of the pros of this hotel are:
1. Affordable rates
2. Ample parking space
3. Close to the beach. You can have a direct view of the beach from the hotel. After spending your time in the beach, you can walk to your hotel room for a shower.
4. Convenient to watch sunset and sunrise. Just a few minutes walk and you are in the view points.
5. Have a good restaurant that serves variety of food at affordable prices.
6. Lot of rooms and available without advance reservation (most of the times).
7. Safe for families.
8. Friendly staff (but they do expect some tips in return).
Points to note
If you are looking for executive type accommodation with all modern amenities like swimming pool and indoor games/gym etc, you may want to look for other 3 star facilities available in the locality. The TTDC hotel is more like a budget, mass accommodation facility in a good location.
