JAWAHARLAL NEHRU PLANETARIUM
The Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium situated at Sir T.Chowdiah Road, is founded by Bangalore City Corporation in 1989 and handed over to the newly formed Bangalore Association for Science Education (BASE) in 1992. SKY-THEATRE
The Sky theatre in the Planetarium has a 15 m. diameter dome with a seating capacity of 210 and it is equipped with 'Space Master' Planetarium Projector, which projects the night sky on the dome. The Projector is also used for teaching astronomy.
Sky-theatre shows are so popular that they attract more visitors each day to the Planetarium. The speciality of the show is that its mingles science with other groups like art and culture, literature etc. Not only science, but also it focus on historical backgrounds, modern developments and future prospects. Apart from this, they concentrate on visuals that includes cartoons, animations, video clippings and so more. Other than the 'Space Master' projector, Slide projectors, video projectors, special effect projectors, etc., are also used for the shows.EXHIBITION HALL:
There is also an exhibition hall in the Sky-theatre which exhibits various science posters that are not shown in the shows. The posters are of high value to those who want to know more about astronomy. One can see pictures of Galaxies also in the exhibition hall. You can also see stalls from where we can buy books, science materials, models, telescopes, astro-photos etc., Apart from the exhibition poster, stalls, there is also a Weighing Scale that shows one's weight on all the planets and also gives a print-out of it. A Science kiosk is also installed in the exhibition hall.SCIENCE CENTRE AND SCIENCE PARK:
There is a Science Centre and also a Science Park in the Planetarium. The Science park is provided with an idea of learning science elements in a natural and playful manner. The Science park creates the right scientific ambience around the activities conducted at the Science Center. Some of the models on display at the Sciene park of this planetarium are the models of D.N.A., Resonant Swings, Whispering Dishes, Sun Dial, Giant Kaleidoscope, Model of a PSLV rocket.ASTRONOMICAL EVENTS:
Special arrangements are made open to the public to view comets, solar eclipse and other planetary transitions. During these days, portable telescopes are arranged in the open area of the planetarium, to view those events. On occasion of events happening elsewhere, video projectors are used to project the live coverage on large screen and is open to the public. KNOW YOUR STAR:
If you want to know about your star, this facility can be arranged at the Planetarium. On First Sunday of every month, this events takes place with a lecture session in the sky-theatre, where Stars, constellations are identified. Those who attend the session are provided with their star chart and the methods of using it will also be taught. Then the session will be followed by star watching session, where you will be allowed to use the telescopes, well-manned by professional astronomers. EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES:
In the Planetarium, Educational activities like experiments on atmospheric pressure, rocket launch, speedometer are also conducted for the science students high school children and BSc. students) on weekends between 10.30 AM and 4.30 PM.LOCATION:
