Shivanasamudra is one of the most beautiful waterfalls you can find in South India. The Kaveri River gets bisected by the rocky terrains of the deccan plateau leading to two twin waterfalls by the name of Gaganachukki and Bharachukki.

Shivanasamudra is one of the most beautiful waterfalls you can find in South India. The Kaveri River gets bisected by the rocky terrains of the deccan plateau leading to two twin waterfalls by the name of Gaganachukki and Bharachukki. Gaganachukki forms the western branch while Bharachukki forms the eastern branch. Both the falls are equally beautiful. One can enjoy the scenic beauty of Gaganachukki from the watch tower.
You can see the gushing flow of water amidst the rocks. Though there isn't any approved path to see this fall more closely, many people climb down the rocks in an attempt to view the waterfalls from behind/top. These are too risky, as the rocks are slippery, resulting in many fatal accidents. Close to this falls one can see the hydro electric project which is still functional. Further 5km down, you can catch the beautiful Bharachukki falls.
The roads leading to this fall isn't that great and there is a stretch of around 500 meters where you can hardly go above 10kmph.You can park your vehicle on the top and walk down to see the falls more closely. The steps are very steep (close to 100) and rocky. It isn't advisable for the elderly people, as climbing back would be really difficult once you reach the bottom there are boat rides (parisal) to the main waterfall. Charges near Shivanasamudra
They will charge you Rs. 100 for one ride and 4-5 persons can easily go in one trip. Make sure that he takes you as close to the falls as possible so that you get completely drenched in the falls. It's a really good experience. There are also many small rapids which you might have wade across, to get a better view of the falls. Crossing those itself is a big challenge and worth enjoying. You can go really close to the falls and stay under the falls for long. There are pools of water nearby where you can swim and take bath. It would be wise to take your spare dresses as you descend; going back and worth won't be a good idea. There isn't any place to change clothes which is a sad thing and one has to rely on natures help for that. When to visit the Shivanasamudra
The best time to visit these falls is during the monsoons (June to September).Even winters (Nov to Jan) are good. It's better to reach the falls before 9am in the morning or after 3pm in the evening. There isn't any accommodation facility nearby but you have lots of small shops where you can enjoy snacks/drinks. How to Reach:

Travelling By Bus:
Direct bus services to these falls are absent. One can catch the bus to Kollegala from Bangalore/Mysore and hire a cab or auto from there. Usually the buses are crowded and it's advisable to hire a cab from Mysore /Bangalore.
