Charminar one of the major tourist attractions, is located in Hyderabad, the capital city of the state of Andhra Pradesh, in India. Charminar was built by Sultan Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah, the fifth ruler of the Qutb Shahi dynasty in the year 1591. The king had shifted his capital city from Golconda to the present Hyderabad. This famous structure , charminar, was built as a memorial for the elimination of plague which was ravaging the city. The King Quli Qutb prayed to Allah and vowed to build a masjid if all of his people were cured and the city was returned to prosperity. The Masjid he built bacame known as Charminar as it had four minarets .
The structure had been constructed of granite, lime and mortar as well as pulverised marble and was located in the center of the city of those days. It is also believed that there ws a tunnel connecting the palace at Golconda Construction of the Charminar of Hyderabad
Charminar whichh has the Islamic architecture looks sturdy and solid from afar but as you go nearer it emerges as the most elegant and romantic edifice . Even in the nights Charminar equally looks elegant when illuminated. Charminar is a squarish monument with 20 meters long on each side with minarets in the corners. These gracefully carved minarets are about 48.7 meters tall above the ground level to give you the commanding landscape for kilometers around. These four minarets are built into the structure unlike in the Taj mahal Each minaret has four stories with a delicately carved ring marks each storey. there are 149 steps inside each minaret to take the visitor to the top floor and the highest point one can reach and get a panoramic view of the city of Hyderabad.
The mosque at Charminar is located at the fourth floor and it is said that each of floors was meant for a separate branch of learning but as the British forces took it over, they became the godown /the warehouse for opium and liqueurs.
There is a vault inside which opens from inside like a dome supports the two galleries one over the other within the Charminar.Above therse galleries there is a terrace which srves as a roof with a stone balcony. The main gallery has about 45 covered spaces which are used for the prayers with a large space for the Friday prayers in the front.
Makkah Masjid is located just opposite to the famous Charminar. There is a thriving market going on even now and the place is still called the Charminar market. The market attracts peopl,e from all over the world where in they can find any type of merchandise of any description. Charminar market had about 14000 shops in its heyday but now the new markets in the area called Laad Bazaar and Pather Gatti are the favourites for the tourists and the locals alike for hand made jewellary.
