Kovalam is a popular holiday destination located 16 km from Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala. The town got its name because it is engulfed by coconut groves and palm groves. Kovalam actually has three beaches, crescent-shaped separated from each other by huge rocks. Each beach has steep palm groves engulfing it from one or two sides. Kovalam is located on the Arabian Sea.

Kovalam Beaches

Out of the three beaches, the one which is larger than the other two is referred as the Light House Beach. The beach gets its name from the tall lighthouse situated on the Kurumkal hill. The second largest beach is referred to as Hawah Beach. The third beach is known as Samudra Beach.

Out of the three beaches, the two beaches that comparatively have a larger crowd include the Light House Beach and Hawah Beach. Samudra Beach, however, doesn't have much crowd and is used by local fishermen for their fishing trade. Kovalam has never been a tourist spot initially. Earlier it was known as a Hippy Idyll. But it was only a few decades ago, this place gain importance.

The person responsible for getting Kovalam in the public eye is said to be the Maharaja of Travancore. It was only because of him, that this place turned into a Paradise, as it is locally called. Over these past three decades, Kovalam has been well developed and placed as a prime tourist destination on the country map. The main potential of Kovalam lies in its beaches.
