About the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary


Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, is located on the banks of the well known Vembanad lake or Vembanattu kayal as it is called in the local language Malayalam. The Kumarakom bird sanctuary, spread across 14 acres, is an ornithologist's paradise. The sanctuary is a favourite haunt of migratory birds like the egret, darter, siberian stork, heron, teal etc.

You can see variety of migratory birds which flock in thousands, some of them from the Himalayas and some even from the far off Siberia. You can also see native kingfishers come in flaming colours and go for a walk under rookeries of egrets and night herons. While going for walks or cruises on boats you can see some lone golden-backed woodpeckers and the acrobatics of the paradise fly-catchers as well.
The main attractions of the Kumarakom Bird sanctuary are local birds of which you can find many species like the egret, waterfowl, cuckoo, heron, the owl and the water duck. The Birds like Parrots, teal, larks, flycatchers, wood beetle, are seen only during their respective migratory seasons.

Pathiramanal Island, literally meaning Sands of the midnight is another island on the lake which can be reached easily by a boat from the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary. Here also you can find varieties of birds local as well as migratory and some rare birds that fly in from other parts of the world too.

Best time to visit the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary


If you just plan to watch local birds June to August that is during the south west monsoon time will be the best period.
If you plan to watch the migratory birds the best time will be November to February.

Kumarakom is 14 kilometers from the town Kottayam. State Highway No. 1 which connects Kochi and Thiruvanthapuram passes through Kumarakom
You have to reach Kochi airport at Nedumbassery which is located at about 106 kilometers from Kumarakom or Kottayam railway station to go to Kumarakom.
