Mudumalai National Park in Nilgiri Hills - Overview


Mudumalai National park is situated at the northwestern side of the Nilgiri Hills which is the tri- junction of the three southern states of Tamilnadu, Kerala and Karnataka. Mudumalai National Park also declared as a Tiger Reserve is one of the first wild life sanctuary established in India. It is divided in five ranges- Masinaguri, Thepakadu, Mudumalai, Kargudi and Nellakota. It covers an area of 321 square kilometer and contiguous with Bandipur National Park, Wynad wild life sanctuary and Sigur and Singara reserve forests.

Flora


There are three main types of vegetation in the park
1) Tropical moist deciduous
2) Tropical dry deciduous
3) Southern tropical dry thorn forest
In addition to this we can see tropical semi ever green forest in the southwestern part of Madumalai.
Many tree species such as Casseria, Ovoides, Litsea mysorensis, Cinnamomum malabatrum and Olea dioca are found in the park. The plant species found in the park are Mangifera indica, Pongamia glabra, Terminalia arjuna, Syzygium Cumini, Indian rosewood and the Bamboos.

Fauna

There are 50 species of fishes, 21 species of amphibians, 34 species of reptiles and 55 species of mammals are found here. Bengal tiger, Indian leopard, Jungle cat, Leopard cat, Indian elephant, Gray langur, Bonnet macaque, Sambar deer, Chital deer, Indian muntjac and Wild boar are some common animals of this park.

Avifauna

There are 227 bird species found in the park which includes 110 species of insectivores, 62 carnivores, 23 fishivores, 12 omnevores and 20 species of grainivores. Some predatory birds like crested hawk eagle, crested serpent eagle, changeable hawk eagle, black eagle, oriental honey buzzard, jetrdo's baza, bonelli's eagle, crested goshawk, besra, mottled wood owl and brown hawk owl can also be seen in this park.

How to Reach Mudumalai National Park


By Air:


The nearest airport is at Coimbatore which is 160 kilometers from the park

By Train:


The nearest railway station is at Udhagamandalam which is 67 kilometers from the park but the convenient railhead is at Mysore which is 90 kilometers away from the park.

By Bus:


The Mysore- Ooty highway runs through the park. The nearest town Gudalur is situated along the highway which is 16 kilometers away from the park. There are regular bus service from Udhagamandalam , Mysotre and neighbouring town to the park.

Mudumalai national park is a great spot for wildlife lovers. We visited over a year ago, The drive into the forest areas was an awesome experience.
