Nagarhole National Park or Rajiv Gandhi National Park is located 94 kilometers away from Mysore in Karnataka, India. The park spread over 643 square kilometer with adjoining Bandipur National Park, Mudumalai National Park and Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary. It is a part of the Niligiri Biosphere Reserve. It was declared as a Wildlife Sanctuary in 1955 and national park in 1988. The park with its rich forest land is very suitable for tiger, Indian bison and elephant. The park has also small streams, valleys and waterfalls scattered here and there.

Flora:


Nagarhole Park is covered by dry deciduous forest and moist deciduous forests. The main trees found in this park are Rosewood, Teak, Sandalwood and Silver Oak. Many species of trees like Terminalia tomentosa, Tectonia grandis, Lagerstroemia lanceolata, Pterocarpus marsupium, Grewia tiloefolia, Dalbergia latifolia, Adina, Cordifolia, Bombax malabaricum are commonly found in this park.

Mammals


The commonly found animals are tiger, Indian bison and Asian elephant. The park also has an abundance of jackals, grey mongoose, sloth bears, striped hyenas, spotted deer or chital, sambar, barking deer, four horned antelopes and wild boar. The other mammals are palm civet, mouse deer, Indian pangolin, Indian porcupine and Indian giant flying squirrel.

Avifauna


There are 270 species of birds found in this park including the oriental white backed vulture, vulnerable lesser adjutant, greater spotted eagle and the Niligiri wood pigeon. The other common birds are white checked barbet, Indian scimitar babbler, Malabar whistling thrush, painted bush quail, sirkeer malkhoa, ashy prinia and Indian robin.

Reptiles:


The most commonly found reptiles in this park are vine snake, common wolf snake, rat snake, bamboo pit viper, Russell's viper, common krait, Indian rock python and Indian monitor lizard.
