About Gujarat

Historical background


Back in the 15th century this city was called as Karnavati and was ruled by Karandev. Later Sultan Ahmed Shah conquered this place and renamed it as Ahmedabad. During his rule the city was developed to the east of the Sabarmati river and later expanded with lakes, and beautiful structures on both sides of the river. The city was spacious and houses the Bhadra fort which is situated within twelve gates. Other significant shrines include the tombs of Ahmed Shah and his queens, monuments like the Jama Masjid, Ahmed Shah's mosque, Mosque of Sidi Sayed, and not to forget the Teen Darwaza or the Triple Gateway. All these shrines / mosques relive the past history because of their sultanate craftsmanship based Islamic architecture.
The Islamic influence has seeped into modern architectures too. Did you know that the well-known IIM- Indian Institute of Management, Ahemadabad was designed by Louis Kahn? The city has about 76 parks and 96 traffic islands with the famous ones being the Victoria Garden, Bal Vatika and Law Garden.

Best time to visit


The city has slightly extreme weather with being cold in the months of November to February and hot between April to June. From the end of January the weather turns out to be very pleasant and the skies are covered with colorful and multi designed kites. How to reach?


Ahmedabad is one of the major cities of Gujarat and is very well connected by road, rail and air to Mumbai, Delhi and other parts of the country. The airport is an international terminal and is about 8kms from the city. Like the airports in metros, Amdavad X ray scanning machines, book stall s, shopping arcade, left luggage facility, VIP, guest and child care rooms, conference hall, reserved lounge etc. Private taxis, auto rickshaws are readily available for transfer to the city.   • Sabarmati Riverfront: A wonderful walkaway for all seasons along the banks of the Sabarmati river. The water is furnished from the Narmada Canal, and it is the longest riverfront of the world measuring 13 kms. The entry to the riverfront is free. You can walk along the river front or take water amusement rides like the speedboat or motor boat.
