I am writing this review from a beautiful homestay type vacation cottage called 'Thushaaram', located at Kuttikkanam near Thekkady. This is my second visit to Thushaaram and I'm sure I will come back again. Thushaaram is not the most luxurious vacation property I have stayed but it definitely is one of the properties I fell in love with. My previous visit was about 9 months back and you can read my previous experience at Thushaaram.

If Thushaaram is not available on your date of travel, you may look at a couple of other homestays in Kuttikkanam.

Where is Thushaaram?

Thushaaram is located at Kuttikkanam, about 2.5 km off from Kottayam - Kumily - Thekkady route.

If you are coming by bus from Kottayam, take a bus to Kattappana and get down at Pallikkunnu stop, which is the next main stop after Kuttikkanam. From Pallikkunnu, you can take an auto to Thushaaram. If the auto guy doesn't know THushaaram, you can give the landmark as MBC college.

If you are coming by Kumily or Thekkady bus, then get down at Kuttikkanam junction. Take an auto from the bus stop and ask them to take you to Thushaaram holiday home near MBC college.

Places to see in and around Thushaaram and Kuttikkanam

This is not just an intermediate station for travellers to Thekkady or Alleppey. Kuttikkanam itself is a very beautiful, scenic location. There are many tourist attractions within 20km range around Kuttikkanam.

Sahyadri Museum is an interesting place, located just 0.5 km from Thushaaram and is worth a visit. This museum has a good collection of books and antique items that demonstrate the history of Ayurveda, spices, the ancient tribal livelihood, ayurvedic medicines etc

Parunthumpara is another beautiful tourist destination in the Kottayam - Thekkady route, near Kuttikkanam. This is a very beautiful grassy hill area with very deep valleys and meadows all around. During weekends, hundreds of people visit Parunthumpara and the place is pretty crowded. To enjoy the beautiful meadows here, you must visit on weekdays when there is not much crowd.

"Ammachi Kottaram" is another interesting place you don't want to miss if you are a history lover. This is an old summer palace used by the wife of Travancore king. Currently, this old palace is owned by a private party and they are not maintaining the palace. A caretaker is living here and he will open the palace for visitors if you can pay him some tips.

What do you get in Thushaaram

Even though I have covered these details in my previous article, I would like to share the latest details based on my current visit.

Upon arrival, I didn't notice much of changes here. The building and the surroundings look pretty much the same. The property is very well maintained by the caretaker, who is the same person we met last time also. "Johnychettan" is about 60 years old but he is still young and energetic. We had informed that we will reach here at 5 pm and he was present in front of the cottage when we arrived. He handed over the key to us and showed us all the essential utilities.

When we enter the cottage, what we see first is the living room which has sofa seats, a television, room heater, fan etc.

There are 2 bedrooms, a dining hall and a kitchen. Many new things have arrived in the kitchen including a small refrigerator, gas stove, cooking vessels, plates, glasses etc. If we want to cook, we can do it here. We heard from the caretaker that there is a small but good restaurant nearby and we can order food from there. We took the easy option and picked up some food from the restaurant.

Booking and rent

As of now, the rent per day for the full cottage is Rs 3,000/-. If you are booking for multiple days, you may be able to bargain a discount.
