Jaisalmer Desert Festival:
Jaisalmer desert festival is an annual function of the city. This year it is going to be held on 17 -2-2019 to 19-02-2019. The celebration starts in the Hindi month of "Magh" three days prior to the full moon night. This festival is celebrated among the beautiful sand sesame of the Thar Desert at Sam Dunes, almost 42 km far from Jaisalmer city. The place is completely remote anddeserted which infuses with life annually during the time of Desert festival.

Mythological Background:
It is said that during the time of Mahabharata Lord Krishna had told Arjuna that in future a successor from Yadava Dynasty would establish his kingdom on Trikuta hills. Later, in the year 1119, a descendant of Yadavas named Rawal Jaiswal set up his kingdom in Jaisalmer. As the prediction of Lord Krishna came true, the people celebrated the fact and later this celebration changed into an annual function celebrated every year in Magh at Jaisalmer.

About the Festival:

This year, the festival is going to start on 17th February 2019 and ends on 19th February 2019. The festival begins with the procession starting from Jaisalmer Fort and ends at Shahid Poonam Singh Stadium. The local residents of the place put on their traditional colourful dresses which looks mesmerizing. The procession proceeds to stadium singing folk songs and dancing on the streets. These forms of songs and dance showcase their difficult life and also depict their happiness, love, and achievements in the desert in-spite of the struggles and hardship they face.

Train Connectivity: Jaisalmer is well connected with countywide railway routes. You can check train availability to Jaisalmer via RailMitra and can plan your journey to Jaisalmer. If you are in New Delhi, you can board trains like Ranikhet Express (Train Number – 15014) or DLH JSM express to reach Jaisalmer. Check your PNR status regularly, if you have a reserved berth for travelling. You can also order healthy and tasty food in train.

Air-Connectivity: Jaisalmer Airport is a military airport so the commercial flights do not land at Jaisalmer Airport. The nearest airport is Jodhpur which is well connected with major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Udaipur. It takes almost 5-6 hours of drive from Jodhpur to Jaisalmer. You can opt for a cab or taxi to reach Jaisalmer.

Road Connectivity: As it takes almost 17 - 18 hours of road trip to reach Jaisalmer from New Delhi, so buses don't operate on this route. You can switch buses to reach Jaisalmer via road. You can board the bus from New Delhi to Jaipur and change the bus again from Jaipur to Jaisalmer.
