The Edakkal Caves are among the main attractions of Wayanad. The caves have probably been there since eternity but were discovered only in 1895.

Edakkal means 'a stone in between', and you'll realise why the place has been given that name when you visit. A huge boulder stands wedged between two other boulders.

The interesting feature of these caves are the prehistoric etchings and drawings, preserved on the cave walls. The rock surface displays various motifs, including human figures and animals. Some archaeologists estimate these etchings to belong to the stone age, which was over 7000 years ago. Though there are some contradictions because fresh research indicates that they belong to the Indus Valley Civilisation.

Get ready, grab a pair of walking shoes for a trek to Edakkal caves.
