Pakhal Wildlife Sanctuary

A trip to Warangal is not complete without a sojourn at the vast Pakhal Lake. That should ring a bell for those of you who are familiar with the getaways from Hyderabad. For those who are new, Warangal is a place of forts and temples, dominated by nature, around 150kms from Hyderabad. The Pakhal Lake, about 50 kms from Warangal, is connected by a number of roads. Hard to believe, it is a man-made lake. It was completed in 1213 AD by the kakatiya. The lake was excavated during the reign of Ganapati Deva and is named after the person involved in the completion. The sanctuary is beside the lake, spread across 860 sq kms, enveloped by forested hills 280-300 ft altitude. The sanctuary was established in 1952. The charming landscape is a great combination and a tourist delight! A large number of migratory birds visiting this place during winter make this season the best times to visit the sanctuary.

The vegetation consists of tropical dry deciduous mixed forests, bamboo, and mixed teak forests. The evergreen species include Aegele Marmelos and Mallotus Philippensis and deciduous vegetation includes Adina Cordifolia, Bombax Ceiba, Bridelia Retusa, etc. The low hill plateau is also covered by climbers, woody herbs, shrubs, and monsoon plants. Extensive grasslands occur in patches near the lake during the winter. Animal species are varied including leopard, sambhar, nilgai, sloth bear, spotted deer, mountain gazelle, four horned antelope, wild boar, and blackbuck. The migratory waterfowls and waders arriving at the lake between November and March, make this place special during winter.
