This article presents the different places in the outskirts of mysore city that one can visit and relax. In addition to the commonly known places at mysore this article helps the traveler to explore other places which are less poplular but fantastic to visit.
Mysore is the city of traditions. It has to its fame more wonderful places that are world famous. Here I will try to present some other places which are less popular but really fantastic to visit and relax.
Blue Lagoon: This is an Island created by the back waters of KRS. Located about 2 kms from KRS this place can turn out to be an excellent picnic spot that one can relax.
You can reach this place by taking an auto from KRS.
The place does not offer any amenities. Food and other things should be taken by yourself.
Balmuri and Edamuri falls : Located about 4 kms from KRS dam they are small falls surrounded by lush greenery. It is highly enchanting and relaxing place that one can visit. You can hire an auto or taxi to reach this place.
Somanathpur Temple : Somanathpur is a small village of Mysore on the banks of river Cauvery which is famous for its grand Keshava temple carved in the Hoysala style. It is a good sculptural monument.
Talakad : This is a small village on the banks of river cauvery near mysore. It has numerous shiva temples which are buried under sand and excavated once in 12 months. It has temples built in cholas, hoysalas and chalukyas style.
Nanjangud : This is a small town near mysore which is famous for it Nanjundeswara(Shiva) temple. It is a half an hour journey from mysore. You can take a local bus from mysore to Nanjangud.
Other nearby places you can visit
1) The Zoo - Started by the mysore wodeyars it is a nice place to spend with your kids. It has many species of animals that you can see.
2) Chamundi hills: It has its name by the Goddess Chamundi who killed the demon Mahishasura according to mythology. It has a small temple of Chamundi which is a good place to visit.
3) KRS - The huge dam built across the river Cauvery. It is also called the Bridavan gardens which has musical fountain also.
4) Bandipur National Park : This park is about 80 kms from mysore and offers an experience of viewing many rare and nice wild animals. It is in the foothills of the Nilgiris. It has karnataka tourism departments cottages and some privately owned cottages for your accomodation.
Ranganthittu Bird Sanctuary: It is a small island of cauvery river which is the home for many exotic birds. Nearest town is Sriranga patna and the sanctuary is at its best from June to October.
Jaganmohana Palace : This is the most beautiful palace of the Wodeyars which is worth a visit. The whole palace will be lit in the night everyday and its a wonderful sight at night.
Lalit mahal : This was the summer palace of the Wodeyars. Now it is turned into a hotel. Its architecture is a worth visit.
