This fabulous evergreen garden was built in the 18nth century by the step brother of Aurangzeb who went by the name of Fidai Shan. According to one olden anecdote, Pinjaur is associated with the Pandava brethren of Mahabharat fame. They had crossed over this striking place during the periods of their exiles. Today, there stand many temples and bathing ghats of Mahabharat period. Garden is perched in form of seven disembarked terraces. The middle passages of each terrace are encrusted with arterial water pathways. Water fountains, tangent latticework, water ponds, water springs- all lend the water pathways an unforgettable experience of a lifetime to the tourists. The second terrace was a curtain-garden formerly. There is a wall here, where there are six columns, each columns consisting of 15-15 smallish alcoves which are illuminated with earthen pots light by pitching them in on to the walls. The subdued lamp light and water wins over the hearts of tourists. There is a magnificent colour-palace(Rang Mahal) on the second terrace, down below which flows a cliff falling into a concrete built pond. Stepping aside through stairs from Rang Mahal, we reach on to the third terrace. There is a big pond over there in the fourth terrace in the middle of which is a water castle (Jal Mahal). Here, the queens of Fidai Khan used to come to take bathes. This Jal Mahal at present is being used as a restaurant. The bird's eye views of the entire garden could be had from this restaurant. Just adjacent to the garden is the bird sanctuary. Here, numerous varieties of chirping birds and silent animals could be seen roaming around. I will suggest you not to miss the joy of visiting the Sukhana Lake which is an artificial lake located near the rock garden. It is spread in an area of 3 Sq kilometres. You can take the joy of boating here. Every year rounds, there are competitions of boating-racing here which is worth watching. Thousands of competitors take part into this race from within the country and abroad also.
The chirping birds sitting throughout the fringes of this lake naturally attract the attention of tourists. The best time to visit Pinjaur, Shimla, Kasauli etc is from March to May and from November to December.
