Swaminarayan Akshardham Temple, a divine place that mixes dexterity of craftsmanship with modernity of artistic display epitomizes ten thousand years of Indian culture. This immensely divine piece of architectural exposition is a tribute to Bhagwan Swaminarayan (1781-1830 CE), a torchbearer of Indian culture. It is inspired by Pramukh Swami Maharaj, and the enormous devotional efforts of 11,000 artisans and volunteers of Bochasanwasi Shri Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS). This beautiful temple was built in only five years and was inaugurated in November 2005. It was built to fulfill the wish of Brahmaswarup Yogiji Maharaj, the fourth successor in the spiritual hierarchy of Bhagwan Swaminarayan. The word "Akshardham" means the eternal, divine abode of the supreme God, the abode of eternal values and virtues of Akshar as defined in the Vedas and Upanishads where divine bhakti, purity and peace forever pervades.

It is set in a vast 100 acre site and radiates out divinity, joy, harmony and beauty. The spectacular thing about Akshardham temple is that it showcases exhibitions, luxuriant gardens and other breathtaking attractions for its visitors. It gives a panoramic view into facets, insights and beauty of Indian culture.

Akshardham temple is erected with no steel and consists of 234 elaborately carved pillars, 9 complex domes, 20 quadrangle shikhars, spectacular Gajendra Pith (podium of stone elephants) and 20,000 statues of India's great sages, devotees, preachers and divine characters of the Era. The temple is built of pink stone which is symbolizing bhakti in evergreen flower and pure white marble symbolizing absolute spotlessness and eternal harmony. Its height, width and length dimensions are 141.3 ft, 316 ft and 356 ft respectively. In the inner chamber of the temple lies the 11 feet high beautiful and divine statues (murti )of Bhagwan Swaminarayan and the murtis of Guru Parampara, namely, Aksharbrahma Gunatitanand Swami, Bhagatji Maharaj, Shastriji Maharaj, Yogiji Maharaj and Pramukh Swami Maharaj.

Admirers and religious people can also have the darshan of the God and Goddesses of Sanatan Dharma in the form of idols which are truly beautiful. One can have darshan of Lord Sita-Ram, Lord Radha-Krishna, Lord Lakshmi-Narayan, Lord Shiv-Parvati, and their subsequent avatars and twenty-four Chaturvyuh or Keshav murtis of God. The divine composure in the inner sanctum called Garbhagruh is highly pacifying and it is said to arouse peace and divine contentment. Its interior structural design is really breathtaking. The interior of the main temple has 8 intricately carved mandapams, the external wall, known as the Mandovar, has 200 sculptured stone figures.

The Mandovar is having the size as 611ft x 31ft which is the largest to be built in the last 800 years. It is prepared with the eight different layers which are named as Gajstar, Sinhstar, Vyalstar, Kumbhstar, Kalashstar, Gavakshstar, Jangha and Chhajja making a total of 4,287 carved stones. The Kumbhstar includes 48 elaborately carved Idols of Lord Ganesha.
